Brian Stott has worked for many years in the field of secure economic operation of electric power system networks and their markets. He has specialized in the development of the related methods and software. Online software with which he has been associated (state estimation, power flow, contingency analysis, optimal power flow, etc.) is used in Energy Management Systems all over the world. The software for market operations is used by all the Independent System Operators in the USA.
Stott is a Member of the US National Academy of Engineering (2005). In the IEEE he is a Fellow (1983), a recipient of the Millennium Medal (2000), and a participant in the Distinguished Lecturer Program. He has many research publications and has given lectures and courses in 30 countries.
In 1984 he co-founded Power Computer Applications (PCA) Corporation, which he served as President/Chairman until 2000. Thereafter, this became the Energy Solutions unit of Nexant, Inc., to which he is currently a Principal Consultant.
From 1965 to 1984, he taught in universities in England, Turkey, Canada, and the USA. During this time he also spent seven years as software development leader at CEPEL, the Brazilian electric energy research center. He received his Ph.D. in electric power systems from the University of Manchester, England.
